How to get around in Mauritius

Transportation

If you want to explore Mauritius properly, it’s not only about the right place to start from, but also how to get around the island. There are several possibilities and a few suggestions from our experiences.

Rental car

The rental car is definitely the most convenient and fastest form of transportation on the island.
You can get anywhere quickly and even inexperienced people adjust to the left-hand traffic if they are not used to it. Mauritians have their own driving style, but they are amazingly considerate and helpful towards strangers. You will quickly notice that driving is actually very easy around the island.
We have been working with the same rental company for many years now. They are reliable and always on time. Their fleet is not older than 5 years and very well maintained. In the event of a damage, which unfortunately can happen, they were always helpful to our guests and with a very nice manner.
The car is brought to the residence, free of charge and picked up again at the residence. Pick-up and delivery at the airport is also possible for a small fee.
Just contact us for more information, we will be happy to organize a rental for you.

In the months of October to January and Easter, a reservation is recommended as these are well visited times. There may be bottlenecks and if you want to be sure, you better reserve in advance.
Payment: The rental car is usually paid on site in cash.

Scooter

In addition to the car, the scooter is certainly a cheap alternative. But you should consider the traffic on the island. Unfortunately there is no emission regulation in Mauritius and especially the buses smoke very heavily. Getting behind such a vehicle with your scooter is definitely not pleasant at all. For smaller tours on the island it surely is a great alternative. We are very happy to help you with renting a scooter. Just contact us.

Taxi

Certainly a very convenient way to get around the island, you get the ‘travel guide’ included. Be aware, if you want to take a tour by taxi, you have to book it 1-2 days in advance (depending on the season) for a 1/2 or full day tour. The taxi driver will pick you up from our place and the tour will go wherever you want. We work with reputable taxi drivers, who will be happy to show you around the island. No shady shops which sell cheap items as expensive branded goods. Talk to us and we will help you to organise it.

Bus

The bus stop can be reached within a few minutes by foot from our place. From here you can get to any point on the island. Bus travel in Mauritius is reasonably priced, it only takes a little time and patience and for sure is worth the experience. You should take the bus at least once. The route network is good, there are no real timetables, but usually you never have to wait too long for a bus. Then just tell the driver where you want to go and he will be happy to help you. Buses drive only from 6am to 6pm.

Bicycle

Mauritius is unfortunately not what you could call a bike island. Basically, it already fails because of reasonable bike rentals. We have 2 bikes to rent, if you are interested for a short ride let us know.
